The different villages and settlements on the Amalfi Coast have different characters and generally we’d suggest you read our destination pages to choose the location that suits you best. But if finding the right hotel is your chief priority, then this selection of the ‘best’ Amalfi Coast hotels might help you to decide. It’s not a scientific list: instead a selection which covers most locations and star ratings. The selection is based on value for money, location, views and facilities and, most important of all, the opinions of past guests. Often the old traditional hotels, recommended for years in guidebooks, are content to rest on their laurels. Tourists will keep visiting the Amalfi Coast, they reckon, so why bother to make fresh effort? Frequently the hotels which gain the highest praise from those qualified to judge – guests – are newer hotels, perhaps those with fewer stars, run by younger go-ahead types. As you can read on our Italy hotels page, Italian hotels have long fallen short of the standards expected by modern international travellers. Things have been improving since the advent of online booking and reviewing, but the places most resistant to change are often the oldest, the grandest and those with long-standing reputations. So on this page the emphasis is definitely on customer service, and visitor satisfaction. The Amalfi Coast is often a once-in-a-lifetime destination, and staying somewhere special will really make your holiday one to remember.
We have explained our criteria but of course things do change. Using this list as a starting point, we suggest you read the guest reviews yourself (available via the booking links) and check for the latest reports. Is the service still up to scratch? Is there building work going on? Read recent reviews, and also reviews for the time of year you’ll be travelling. And try to book ahead – this is a destination which fills up fast.
As you will see from this page, often the best hotels with the happiest guests are the well-run, small, friendly and affordable three-star hotels. What they lack in terraces, pools and surroundings is often more than compensated for by the genuine friendliness and above-average service. In our opinion a friendly greeting and helpful advice makes more of a difference to a holiday than a hotel bar or a pool (espciallly with the sea so close). If, however, the luxury factor is important to you, we also make some suggestions for Amalfi Coast luxury hotels.
Hotel Floridiana ***
AMALFI
The Hotel Floridiana in Amalfi is a small 3-star hotel in the little historic centre of Amalfi. Don’t expect sea views as it’s right in the village heart hidden among Amalfi’s picturesque stairways and alleys. The hotel has rave reviews from past guests – it is just about the most praised hotel on the coast – who appreciated the welcoming hostess and staff, assistance with trips and loans of maps and guides, and the good breakfasts in a frescoed breakfast room. Book well ahead as there are only a few rooms.

L’Antico Convitto ***
AMALFI
L’Antico Convitto is another three-star hotel with comfortable rooms (just ten of them) in the historic lanes of Amalfi. It offers good modern features like wireless internet access and air-conditioning and a range of room types including junior suites and family rooms with cooking facilities. It’s on the fourth floor of the building, with a little lift.

Hotel Eden Roc Suites ****
POSITANO
A swankier option in a swankier town, the four-star Eden Roc has an outdoors swimming pool, a sun terrace, the famous views, and satisfies even exacting overseas travellers. It is situated on a main road high above the sea, but most guests feel the views and professional standards of service compensate for any drawbacks.

Hotel Buca di Bacco ****
POSITANO
Another Positano hotel which is highly-praised for its facilities, the service and the food (including an evening restaurant). There are decent cheaper options in Positano but this hotel has really delighted its guests. In a good but busy location above the beach, the hotel has no pool but does have loungers for sunbathing on a terrace; many rooms also have lovely panoramic private terraces.

Hotel Margherita ***
PRAIANO
A hotel in Praiano offering extremely good value for money, with thoughtfully-equipped modern rooms (soundproofing, flat-screen TVs, wireless internet etc.) The hotel offers much more than you’d expect for (current) prices, including a little pool and sun terrace. In a quiet location, this is a great place to relax and admire the views. Guests who have discovered the hotel love it. Unusually for the area, there is parking at hand.

Residenza del Duca
AMALFI
A ‘residence’ – more like a B&B than a full-facility hotel, the Residenza del Duca has been a big hit with visitors to Amalfi for several years now. It offers good and relatively cheap accommodation in the centre of Amalfi, although you must be prepared to climb a lot of steps.

Hotel Maison La Minervetta ****
SORRENTO
Not on the Amalfi Coast, but travellers may be tempted over to the other side of the Sorrento peninsula by this lovely small hotel in Sorrento. La Minervetta has just twelve stylish rooms, huge windows and amazing views over the sea and the Bay of Naples. It’s the sort of boutique hotel that provides guests with some special holiday memories, and it’s a world away from the area’s more traditional hotels.

Since we have a separate luxury hotels page, we haven’t included five-star hotels here but in fact a couple of the newer five-star resort hotels have guest reviews as good as the hotels above: read our Amalfi Coast luxury hotels page for more.
If you prefer to run your own search for hotels which have the best up-to-date guest reviews you can use either (or both) of the hotel booking links below. When you’ve selected a list of hotels available for your travel dates, you can order it according to the ratings of past guests. Take into account the number of reviews available, and read opinions carefully to see if they are relevant.
