Savoy Hotel, Parma - hotel review

About the hotel

Savoy Hotel is a four-star hotel in the centre of Parma, in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. The hotel is an efficient and practical base for visiting the town. I stayed for one night in September 2010, booking a double room for single use online at the very reasonable price of 89.

Arrival at the hotel

The hotel is easy to find, on one of Parma's main streets near the railway station. The hotel stands on a corner and its main entrance is on a side street. On arrival I was greeted with courtesy by the receptionist and directed to my room upstairs, reached by a lift. The hotel's designers have chosen a minimal white look which felt rather basic and clinical in the public areas, and made the narrow corridor upstairs rather claustrophic.

The hotel's minimal style was much more successful in my bedroom, The decor was still simple and mostly white, but the restrained use of different textures and colours - fabric wallpaper behind the bed's black headboard, stone-coloured bedding - gave the room a warmer and more upmarket feel. The double room was a decent size, though there was only one chair to sit on. The bed was made up with sheets and blankets.

Furniture included a large suitcase stand, a long shelf which doubled as a desk (rather obstructed by the curtain), a large mirror, a mini-bar, one bedside table, a flat-screen TV on a wall-mount and a small safe. Instead of a wardrobe, there was an alcove with a rail and shelving for clothes, which didn't seem quite a four-star-standard arrangement.

My bathroom was a good size, comfortable and well-equipped, with a good shower. There was another large mirror, and also a convenient magnifying mirror, space for bottles and washkits, and some free toiletries and decent towels.

The room, despite looking out onto a street, was almost eerily quiet (perhaps I was the only guest on the corridor). There was independently controllable air-conditioning. Both bedroom and bathroom were well-maintained and clean.

Public spaces, facilities and staff

Breakfast was served buffet-style in a room at street level. It was a typical Italian breakfast selection, and included croissants, meat slices, cheese and fresh fruit. Although the meal wasn't particularly lavish, it was perfectly acceptable.

The reception staff I encountered were friendly and helpful.

Savoy Hotel location and directions

The hotel's address is Strada Garibaldi 69. The hotel is situated close to the railway station, on the walking route into the centre of Parma, so it's convenient for rail travellers. Head over the square on the south side of the station, and cross the busy Viale Bottego. Turn left along this street and continue for a couple of blocks until you reach Strada Garibaldi on the right. The hotel is a short distance down Strada Garibaldi and is easy to find, with its main entrance around the corner on Via XX Settembre.

I thought the hotel's minimal style made the public spaces feel rather clinical. However, the bedroom looked smart and its design was well-thought-out. The hotel's location was very convenient for travellers, with both the railway station and Parma's historic sights within easy walking distance. The hotel offered good value for money, with its prices comparing well to other local hotels. Although the hotel has a four-star rating, I would say it belongs at the bottom end of that category - fine, but not luxurious. If you are looking for something a bit more special, I also stayed in an elegant hotel/residence right in the historic heart of Parma, the Palazzo Dalla Rosa Prati, but that was significantly more expensive than the Savoy Hotel.

I'd recommend the Savoy Hotel for travellers - especially those using public transport - looking for a comfortable and convenient base in Parma, with an eye to their budget.
