Anacapri: the best hotelsAbout AnacapriAnacapri is a small town spread over a plateau beneath mountain slopes on the island of Capri. The famous part of the island - the posh boutiques, celebrity sightings, extortionate hotel prices - lies far below, in Capri town. A steep zigzag road up a cliff connects the two towns. In the daytime Anacapri attracts trippers who visit the Villa San Michele museum-house and take the mountain chairlift. But most of the settlement (which is somewhere between a village and a sleepy town) is quiet and residential, with a very different atmosphere to Capri town. If the sun is not too hot, there are pleasant walks to enjoy from Anacapri, and public buses will take you to Capri town, the port, and the island's extremities. Staying in Anacapri is certainly not as glamorous as staying in Capri town, but it should be a more tranquil and less 'touristy' experience. You are also likely to save money, as Anacapri has more mid-range and budget hotels than Capri town, often with a friendlier atmosphere. Anacapri hotels
Casa MariantoniaThis is a friendly small hotel/B&B in the centre of Anacapri, among lemon trees. It is smartly-decorated and isn't particularly cheap, but the accommodation is popular with past guests. The property has two suites for families or those looking for something really special. > Casa Mariantonia: more information / make a booking
Hotel Casa Caprile ***Casa Caprile - once home to a Queen of Sweden - offers fairly simple accommodation in a quiet setting, surrounded by garden. The hotel is good value for money, and sometimes lists some very good rates online. The building is reached via flights of steps, so it wouldn't suit guests with mobility problems. Request one of the rooms with air-conditioning if you're travelling in the summer.

Hotel Senaria ***A small and warmly-reviewed three star hotel, the Senaria is another affordable place to stay in Anacapri. It is well-located for exploring this part of the island, and has good views from the communal terrace.

Hotel Caesar Augustus *****A tricky one, this. The five-star Caesar Augustus has a superbly panoramic position and is renowned for its views. It has attractive rooms and all the facilities you'd expect, including an outdoor 'infinity' swimming pool. Most guests love the hotel. But nevertheless some reviews are quite negative; the hotel has plainly suffered customer service lapses in the past. Read the most recent comments, look at the pictures and make up your own mind.

Hotel Al Mulino ***The three-star Al Mulino is in a rural location outside Anacapri, with green, fruit-and-flower-filled gardens. With a friendly B&B atmosphere, it makes a good place to stay for those who like to walk, explore and relax in peaceful surroundings. This is a very different face of Capri to the one you will see among the designer boutiques of Capri town - although a shuttle service and public buses can take you to the bright lights when you wish.

Il Giardino dell'ArteA B&B in the same green and peaceful area as the Hotel Al Mulino (above). The Giardino dell'Arte has comfortable and carefully-decorated bedrooms with private balconies.
