Hotel Zara, Naples - Review

Hotel Zara **

A good, cheap and reliable hotel, Zara is small and aimed at budget travellers, offering room combinations with and without ensuite bathrooms (breakfast not included). The location is close to the train station - very convenient if not the most salubrious of areas.

Italy Heaven Review

We stayed anonymously at Hotel Zara for one night in June 2005. We were only passing through Naples, and wanted somewhere cheap and convenient to stay before catching a ferry in the morning. Hotel Zara proved to be a good, practical choice.

Arriving from an evening flight, we found the Zara extremely easy to reach - a big advantage as we didn't want to be wandering around Naples with suitcases in the dark. The public bus (number 3S) from the airport passes within yards of the hotel, which is very close to the railway station. Identified by a large sign outside the building, the hotel is situated on the second floor - ring the bell outside the main door to be buzzed in. The lift requires a 5 cent coin to operate it, which is very inconvenient and meant we had to drag our cases up the stairs.

We were greeted with a friendly and efficient welcome, and shown to our room by the English-speaking receptionist. We'd booked a double bedroom but were shown into a large triple bedroom - a wide double bed and a single - which was clean and airy, with a window looking out onto an internal courtyard. It was furnished simply, with good, co-ordinated fittings: a wardrobe, small desk with chair, bedside tables, coat-hooks, television and air-conditioning. The walls were painted pale yellow and were fairly fresh, apart from an outbreak of damp in one corner. Our ensuite bathroom was smart and new, although the toiletries provided were scanty (two soaps and two large towels). The bed was comfortable and there wasn't too much noise, although the reception area was within earshot. The only drawback we found was a flooding shower cubicle - which was fixed once we'd discovered and removed the plastic shampoo label a previous guest had dropped down the plughole.

We checked out in the morning to catch our bus to the port, paying a very reasonable 65 for our stay (note that the hotel doesn't accept credit cards). Although the hotel isn't large and doesn't have much in the way of public space (just an internet point and a small lounge area), we feel it offers good-value and comfortable accommodation, whether you are passing through as we did, or looking for a cheap base for seeing Naples.

The area has the seedy feel common to all city railway station areas, with an added Neapolitan edge. Nevertheless, the busy atmosphere means that there are plenty of people around. We wandered out at about 9pm to find a quick snack and found a reasonable choice of restaurants and bars. The hotel receptionist recommended a restaurant around the corner, which looked good. There are also plenty of bars serving snacks and delicious pastries, as well as fast food joints at the station.

Hotel address: Via Firenze, 81. From Stazione Centrale, head out into Piazza Garibaldi. You can take any of the streets heading north (to your right as you leave the station) and walk one block to reach Via Firenze. For travelling around Naples or further afield, the location is excellent. The station and bus stops are moments away. To reach the port, take bus R2 from Piazza Garibaldi (it departs from the middle of the square, at the far end from the railway station).
