San Gimignano is one of Tuscany's busiest tourist towns, but most visitors are only here for a day trip. In the evening, after the coach-loads have departed, the town is peaceful and atmospheric. Hotel Relais Santa Chiara ****

A rather soulless four-star hotel on the edge of San Gimignano, the Relais Santa Chiara has a scenic location. The hotel's practical position means you can walk into the walled town, but enjoy the benefits of countryside views and a swimming pool.

Hotel Belsoggiorno ***

A three-star hotel with twenty-one rooms, the Belsoggiorno is just inside the town gateway, the Porta San Giovanni (and thus near to the car park and bus stop). The hotel, unusually, has a good restaurant. Rooms are not luxurious, but they have the all-important air-conditioning and private bathrooms, and some have lovely views over the Tuscan countryside.

A cheap and highly-recommended bed and breakfast in the historic centre of San Gimignano. Homely, comfortable, and welcoming, and past guests even rave about the excellent breakfasts (very rare for Italy!).

Outside San Gimignano

The countryside around San Gimignano makes a good base for a Tuscan holiday, and there's a range of accommodation available, from the luxurious to the rustic. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday, or if you fancy touring Tuscany by car, countryside accommodation is a good choice. However, you will find it severely limiting if you don't have a car.

Villasanpaolo Hotel ****

The Villasanpaolo Hotel is a smart villa offering four-star facilities a few kilometres from San Gimignano. The hotel, which is a useful option if you're seeing the area by car, has a garden and an outdoor swimming pool.

Hotel Vecchio Asilo *

Past guests rate this charming little hotel at much higher than its official one-star rating. Located in a historic building in Ulignano di San Gimignano, a small village a short drive from San Gimignano, the Vecchio Asilo is full of character with a helpful host. Impractical if you don't have a car; a great, good-value touring base if you do.

If you're a nature lover who wants to make the most of the green countryside of Tuscany, why not choose the fashionable option of an agriturismo - farmhouse accommodation?
