Stay in Lecce

Since Lecce was not a big tourist destination until recently, it doesn't have the large numbers of historic hotels and pensioni that you'll find in other art cities. This isn't a bad thing, though, since in order to accommodate modern travellers, increasing numbers of enterprising locals are setting up good-quality and affordable B&Bs. Within the historic centre you can stay in either a cheap and decent guest house, or a stylish apartment within one of the town's Baroque palazzi. Since B&Bs can be rather more idiosyncratic than hotels, you should read recent guest reviews before booking. Risorgimento Resort *****

The swankiest place to stay in Lecce, the Risorgimento Resort is a modern five-star hotel in a historic building in the heart of Lecce, close to Piazza Sant'Oronzo. Luxurious, ambitious and convenient too, the hotel has good reviews and is the place to stay if you're planning a luxury trip. The hotel sometimes offers surprisingly good-value rates.

Patria Palace *****

Another, more traditional, five-star hotel, the Patria Palace is also excellently-located in the historic centre, in a grand palazzo among Lecce's sights. The decor is impressive and staff are praised by previous guests.

Eos Hotel ***

A modern and well-thought-out three star 'design hotel' with free wi-fi, a bar, smart and stylish decor. It's a short walk outside the historic centre.

The best Lecce B&Bs

L'Orangerie d'Epoque

Truly lovely B&B for an aspirational Lecce lifestyle. It consists of three luxurious rooms in an eighteenth century palaca around a private courtyard garden. Tea and coffee-making facilities are available. Note that when I last checked there were some special booking conditions.

A hip and stylish B&B where tasteful modern designs show off the building's historic structure. Rooms are comfortable and the location is central. Has a rooftop terrace and bicycles available to borrow.

A reliable bed and breakfast option in the middle of town with a roof terrace and free wireless internet.

LecceSalento

We stayed here in 2008. It's not atmospheric like some of the other B&Bs in town but it is affordable and practical. Just around the back of Piazza Sant'Oronzo and very convenient for Lecce's best ice-cream and cake shop.

A decent B&B with a variety of rooms and 'suites', situated near the castle, very close to - though not actually within - the historic lanes of the centre.
