Where to stay in Genoa

Hotels and B&Bs in this vibrant and varied port city

The centre of Genoa is fairly compact and you can get around the main sights on foot. The bus from the airport stops at the main train station, Stazione Porta Principe, and the hotel list below includes a four-star and a budget hotel close to the station. This area is obviously convenient for travel, though it is not ideal for evenings out, sightseeing will require a bit more walking and of course railway station vicinities can be seedy. Some of Genoa’s old town alleys should really be avoided after dark, but the pleasant and lively lanes near the town’s cathedral and Ducal Palace are quite respectable; the sixteenth/seventeenth century ‘new town’ around Via Garibaldi is equally convenient and nice. I’ve enjoyed staying at a couple of central B&Bs, and another time I’d also consider the Best Western Metropoli Hotel, which is extremely central and close to Genoa’s best art galleries, palaces and shops.

If you want to stay on the rejuvenated waterfront, close to Genoa’s landmark modern tourist attractions (the aquarium, sea museum, Bigo) you can’t do better than the NH Marina. The hotel is large, efficient and modern and built on a wharf alongside the Porto Antico. The hotel isn’t cheap, but it is a good choice if you are visiting the waterfront attractions with children. Tirreno Residence, Procida

Il Giardino Di Albaro

Driving a car into Genoa and parking is awkward and expensive. It’s a peaceful place to stay with free private parking and frequent buses into the centre of town.
