Genoa hotels: where to stay

The centre of Genoa is fairly compact and you can get around the main sights on foot. The bus from the airport stops at the main train station, Stazione Porta Principe, and the hotel list below includes a four-star and a budget hotel close to the station. This area is obviously convenient for travel, though it is not ideal for evenings out, sightseeing will require a bit more walking and of course railway station vicinities can be seedy. Some of Genoa's old town alleys should really be avoided after dark, but the pleasant and lively lanes near the town's cathedral and Ducal Palace are quite respectable; the sixteenth/seventeenth century 'new town' around Via Garibaldi is equally convenient and nice. I enjoyed staying by the cathedral at the Locanda di Palazzo Cicala, and another time I'd consider the Best Western Metropoli Hotel, which is extremely central and close to Genoa's best art galleries, palaces and shops.

Recommended accommodation
Locanda di Palazzo Cicala

Locanda di Palazzo Cicala

If you are keen on 'design' hotels and want to stay centrally, the Locanda di Palazzo Cicala is your best option in Genoa. With large bedrooms and serviced apartments, the Locanda is a convenient and stylish place to stay, though the prices can be rather high for accommodation which isn't luxury standard. Room come with internet-connected computers. I found the hotel a good base for a weekend trip, and have written a detailed review.

Hotel Continental Genova

Hotel Continental Genova

The Hotel Continental is a good-value four-star hotel with modern facilities in an attractive period building. It is by the main train station, Stazione Porta Principe, and the airport bus stop. This may not be the most charming location but it is very useful for travellers wanting to cut down on their transfer times. The central sights of the town are in walking distance.

NH Marina Hotel, Genoa

NH Marina Hotel

If you want to stay on the rejuvenated waterfront, close to Genoa's landmark modern tourist attractions (the aquarium, sea museum, Bigo) you can't do better than the NH Marina. The hotel is large, efficient and modern and built on a wharf alongside the Porto Antico. The hotel isn't cheap, but it is a good choice if you are visiting the waterfront attractions with children. You won't find many hotels with a pirate ship moored alongside.

Best Western Metropoli

Best Western Metropoli Hotel

There are several decent Best Western hotels in Genoa. The Best Western Metropoli is conveniently located in Piazza Fontane Marose, close to the elegant palace-lined streets which give Genoa its prestigious UNESCO listing. Rooms are comfortable, with free wi-fi and tea/coffee-making facilities. A good-value accommodation choice which is ideal for visiting Genoa's galleries and museums.

Balbi Family Hotel

Balbi Family Hotel

This is a popular budget hotel on Via Balbi, close to the main railway station and to Genoa's grand palaces. The hotel is in a historic building with frescoed ceilings. Accommodation is cheap but basic, and the hotel is on an upper floor with no lift.

Tirreno Residence, Procida

Il Giardino Di Albaro

Driving a car into Genoa and parking is awkward and expensive. Il Giardino di Albaro is a practical compromise for drivers, and is also a good base for travellers looking for something a bit different. The three-star hotel is located outside the city centre, in a seaside suburb near the picturesque fishing village of Boccadasse. It's a peaceful place to stay with free private parking and frequent buses into the centre of town.
