Most accommodation in the Cinque Terre villages used to consist of fairly basic rooms to let, advertised on signs placed outside buildings, bars and restaurants in the villages, and some travellers do just turn up and hope for the best. This can be a risky option though, especially in the most popular summer months when the small villages fill up. Happily for travellers, since the villages’ massive popularity boom in the last decade or two, there are many more places to stay from hotels to rental villas.

Hotels are naturally still concentrated in the larger towns along the coast, rather than the tiny picturesque villages of the Cinque Terre itself. In the villages you will find more small-scale accommodation: B&Bs, apartments and guest houses. If you prefer more traditional and reliable hotel accommodation, the convenience of the railway line means that it’s almost as practical to stay in a larger resort nearby. Good bases along the coast with more hotels and tourist facilities include La Spezia (about four hours from Rome by train) and Levanto. La Spezia is to the south of the Cinque Terre (nine minutes by train from Riomaggiore), and is also an excellent base for exploring the lovely Golfo dei Poeti, Portovenere and Lerici. Levanto is in the other direction, a little to the north of Monterosso (five minutes by train), and is another popular place to stay for those exploring the Cinque Terre area. Of the ‘Five Lands’ themselves, Monterosso has the most history as a holiday resort, and there are several places to stay in the village.

Riomaggiore

L'Ancora, Riomaggiore
L’Ancora

A breath of fresh air among the middling accommodation options of Riomaggiore, the Ancora has three stylish rooms and a common area where guests can make themselves hot drinks. It’s an attractively-decorated, friendly and central place to stay, but as it is so small, travellers should be sure to book ahead.

Locanda della Compagnia, Riomaggiore
La Locanda della Compagnia

A small and welcoming guest house in Riomaggiore, overlooking a small piazza. The building is modernised and the simple rooms have bathrooms, air-conditioning and TV. Guest reviews are so-so, but the location is fairly convenient despite the uphill walk from the station.

Borgo dei Campi, Riomaggiore
Borgo di Campi Apartments

Set among olive groves high above Riomaggiore, the Borgo dei Campi complex offers a range of basic apartments for holidaymakers. The views are superb, there’s a panoramic restaurant and the accommodation gets good reviews from past guests. There are limited bus services down to Riomaggiore; it will suit travellers with cars best. Note that there are lots of stairs to climb.

Luna di Marzo, Cinque Terre
Luna di Marzo

In a village called Volastra high above the main Cinque Terre, this is – for the area – a sizeable hotel with ten rooms. There are beautiful views. The standard of accommodation is good, but while some guests love the ‘remote’ location, others hate it, so read the information and reviews carefully. Volastra is connected by bus to Manarola.

Monterosso al Mare

Casa dei Limoni, Monterosso
La Casa dei Limoni

Another gem at which you should book well in advance, the Casa dei Limoni has five double rooms and a junior suite, and a garden of lemon trees. Accommodation is modern and comfortable and the hosts are helpful and welcoming. Note that there is no private parking, and that there is a steep climb to the house.

Villa degli Argentieri, Monterosso
La Villa degli Argentieri

Another small guest house/hotel, the Villa degli Argentieri has good reviews from previous guests. Close to a car park and with views of the sea, it’s a practical base though (like other Cinque Terre accommodation) it isn’t cheap.

La Spezia

La Spezia is not particularly a tourist town but it has several museums and good transport links and is a practical base for exploring the Cinque Terre.

Hotel Ghironi, La Spezia
Hotel Ghironi ****

This is a four-star modern hotel in an unappealing location outside the town centre. However, although the hotel is rather dated it rates highly for service and quality, and a shuttle service into the centre of town makes the location less of an inconvenience. Little atmosphere, but an affordable alternative and practical for car travellers.

Hotel Mary, La Spezia
Hotel Mary ***

Three-star hotel right next to the railway station, which makes it convenient for the short journey along the coast to the Cinque Terre. I stayed there several years ago and although the hotel really didn’t match up to 3-star expectations, the facilities were perfectly acceptable and the price was correspondingly cheap. Given that I was taking advantage of its proximity to the station and spending the daytime out and about, it was fine for my needs. A twenty-minute walk or a short bus ride from the jetty where the tourist boats land.
