The Cinque Terre, Italy

La Spezia, Levanto and Cinque Terre Hotels: Reviews and Bookings

Vernazza at sunset

> Cinque Terre information and destination guide
> Italy hotels advice and frequently-asked questions

Most accommodation in the Cinque Terre villages consists of fairly basic rooms to let. Signs advertising these are placed outside many buildings, bars and restaurants in the villages, and some travellers do just turn up and hope for the best. This can be a risky option, especially in the most popular months when the villages fill up. Among the options we've listed below - all bookable online - is a set of apartments a steep walk (or bus ride) uphill from Riomaggiore.

If you prefer more comfortable or formal hotel surroundings, the convenience of the railway line means that it's almost as practical to stay in a larger resort nearby. Good bases along the coast with more hotels and tourist facilities include La Spezia (about four hours from Rome by train) and Levanto. La Spezia is to the south of the Cinque Terre (nine minutes by train from Riomaggiore), and is also an excellent base for exploring the lovely Golfo dei Poeti, Portovenere and Lerici. Levanto is in the other direction, a little to the north of Monterosso (five minutes by train), and is a popular place to stay for those exploring the Cinque Terre area.

La Spezia Hotel Experience
Hotel Mary was unprepossessing, and really didn't match up to 3-star expectations, although the facilities were perfectly acceptable. But the price too was lower than usual 3-star accommodation. Given that we were taking advantage of its proximity to the station and spending the daytime out and about, it was fine for our needs.
Hotel Mary, La Spezia

Hotel Mary ***

Three-star hotel right next to the railway station, which makes it ideal for the short journey along the coast. Rooms have TV, private bathrooms, air-conditioning, and although lacking in luxury the hotel is good value for money. A twenty-minute walk or a short bus ride from the jetty where the tourist boats land.
